World Bicycle Relief & Pedal to Empower: Education on Two Wheels
For 20 years, World Bicycle Relief (WBR) has been dedicated to providing people in rural areas with access to essential resources – through bicycles. The focus: women and girls, for whom the journey to school is often long, dangerous, or simply impossible.
Globally, over 120 million girls are out of school. In Zambia alone, children walk an average of over 90 minutes to school – every day. Girls, in particular, are at a disadvantage: they miss classes, face danger and harassment, and are often taken out of school early to help at home or to marry.
This is where Pedal to Empower comes in. The global movement initiated by World Bicycle Relief brings people together with one goal: to empower women and girls in rural regions through bicycles. Every year, around World Bicycle Day, people around the globe ride together to raise funds and awareness – for education, self-determination, and equal opportunities.
The goal: Girls who would otherwise spend hours walking to school – or not go at all – receive their own robust Buffalo Bike. These specially designed bikes don’t just shorten the journey; they offer protection, safety, and time savings, while enabling long-term education. And that changes lives – sustainably.
The Impact at a Glance
According to studies and WBR’s experience, one bicycle can mean:
- 28% lower absenteeism in school
- 19% decrease in school dropouts
- 22% reduction in harassment
- Increased confidence: Girls report feeling more independent and empowered
